Melodeon Repaired on The Repair Shop
On the 29th January Episode 4 of the new Series of The Repair Shop saw a Melodeon taken to be repaired.
Irish musician Gary hopes professional organ restorer David Burville can put the wind back in his grandmother’s beloved accordion. Back in the 1940s, it was her most treasured possession. She taught herself to play traditional Irish music by ear and performed at many a household ceilidh. Growing up, she taught Gary the importance of music in bringing people together, and when she died, when he was just 12, he was already hooked. Years later, graduating with a music degree and becoming a teacher himself, he’s keen to see the old melodion restored. It’s riddled with woodworm, and David’s got plenty of fingerwork to contend with. But his mechanical, musical mastery results in a fully restored treasure which fills the barn with pure joy as Gary gives it a play.

Our April Meeting is going to be a guest artist night! It’s the first guest artist night since before the Covid shutdown. The night will feature local players on stage to warm the audience up before Walter Perrie and Helen Rich perform their first guest artist spot of the night. After the break we will see local players start the second half of the night before Walter and Helen perform their second spot of the night, taking us up to 11pm. I am looking forward to seeing Walter and Helen and I hope you can support them by attending.
