Leyland Accordion Club - 19th October 2005

Our October Concert

Our October concert night started with Jean Southern playing Pavements of Paris and Revelle Musette. Jean was closely followed by S'wunderful, Oh Lady Be Good and Fascinatin' Rhythm played by Basil Berry. Tom Bennett then took to the stage with his performances of Moscow Nights, Nessun Dorma, Andalucian Melody and Chorus Of The Hebrew Slaves by Verdi. Harry The Boat was our next player with a selection of slow pieces, including He'll Have To Go and Spanish Eyes. To take us up to the break, we had a duet of Bill Agnew and Jim Gillies from Glasgow on a 12 string guitar playing La Paloma, On The Road Again, Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain, Cuckoo Waltz, Goodnight Irene, Jacqueline Waltz and Oh Lonesome Me. During the break we were entertained by a nice trio of Jay on keyboard, Jean on Accordion and Jim on guitar. After the first break, we started the next session with Colin Ensor playing I Just Couldn't Say Goodnight and Sunshine Of Your Smile. After Colin had played, it was time for The Old Stars. This was a group made up of Bill Agnew, Jim Gillis, Bob Seed and Shirley Seed on their Final World Tour! It was then time for Bill Agnew, Jim Gillis and Jay Ward to get together for a session playing on the dance floor in front of the stage where Jay already had her keyboard set up. They played Bye Bye Blues, The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise and The Sheik Of Araby. We were running a little behind time now so we had a late break during which Jim, Jay and Jean played a selection of pieces. After the break, Tom Bennett and Bob Seed gave us Matchstalk Men, Puppet On A String, Sound Of Silence and Ther'll Always Be An England. It was time for me to play just one piece while the buskers set up in front of me, and we enjoyed a rousing end to a great night. Many thanks to all the players and to Jim Gillis for joining in on his guitar with all the various combinations of accordion, guitar and keyboard. Let's hope we see him again at the club when he is again in the area. This month we are looking forward to our guest artist night with Lisa Lee Leslie. This is our last guest artist night of the year as next month is the final concert night of the year with our Jacob's Join. I hope you can join us for the Lisa Lee Leslie Concert which promises as usual, to be a great night of accordion entertainment.

Alan Venn Music Events

There are a number of evening tickets available for Alan Venn's Organ Keyboard and Accordion weekend at The Mount Hotel, 8 Queens Promenade, North Shore, Blackpool. This event, which runs from Thursday 17th to Sunday 20th of November, features lessons and entertainment during the day, with concerts each night from Harry Hussey, Ken Astin, Ian Wolstenholme and Andrew Seddon, with Ken Gorrel & Trevor Evans on drums & bass. If you would like to attend on the evening of Thursday the 17th or Friday the 18th, then tickets are available from Alan at a price of £5 per person. To find out more about this event, or to reserve your place, ring Alan Venn on 01204 840279. Due to the short notice of these concert places, I have arranged with Alan that people wishing to attend on either of these days can leave their name at Leyland Accordion Club on Wednesday night and I will pass the list of names on to Alan (who may possibly be at the club on Wednesday). You will then be able to attend on Thursday or Friday night and pay on the door. The concert runs from 7.45pm to 10.30pm or 11pm. The hotel is on the seafront - from the tower head out towards Cleveleys, just after Gynn Square (roundabout with a central monument in it). The hotel is between The Savoy Hotel and The Cliffs Hotel.

This Wednesday

Our concert this Wednesday featurs the talents of Lisa Lee Leslie. Lisa Lee, the daughter of John Leslie, will be travelling up from London to play for us on Wednesday. I first heard Lisa Lee playing at Eastbourne Accordion Festival last February and I booked her on the spot. She is a very talented player and one I am sure that you will enjoy. The doors open at 7.30pm for an 8pm start. There will be the usual coffee, tea, raffle, good company and entertainment. See you there on Wednesday. Why not invite a friend along. We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday. David Batty

Steve Roxton Booked

I have booked Steve Roxton as our guest artist for the 15th of March 2005. This being two days before St Patricks Day we are sure to get a good few Irish pieces, as well as accordion standards, and various new pieces you haven't heard before. Steve is in the area for the week around our club night and is currently available for bookings on other nights or days if required. You can telephone him on 01642 316676 or 07797 719614.

Club Membership

It's approaching the time of year where the club membership fees are due for 2006. I am keeping the club membership at £5 per year despite the recent postage increase. The £5 fee gets you a £1 discount on the door on each concert nght and a nice newsletter lovingly sent to your home each month. You can pay your membership at the club this month, in December, or at the January club night.

Brendan Shine

Irish Accordionist and singer, Brendan Shine, is on a tour of England, which includes one local venue this Friday, the 25th Of November, at St. Edmund Arrowsmith Catholic High School, Wigan. Brendan Shine, who regularly uses a 5-row button accordion in his shows, has 35 international hit singles to his credit. His repertoire includes Irish ballads, humorous songs, Country and Western songs, and easy listening music. Brendan is often known for having the hit record "Do You Want Your Old Lobby Washed Down", a song often sung by that famous accordionist from Leyland - David Batty (I do requests you know!) If you want to hear how it should be sung then get along to this concert on the 25th.

Christmas Party

As mentioned in the last newsletter, we are holding our usual Jacob's Join on December the 21st. For those that don't know the term, a Jacob's Join is where we all bring along some item/s of food to club together and make a feast. People bring along some sandwiches, a cake, some sausage rolls, pork pies or something similar and we all tuck into more food than you can shake a stick at while listening to whoever is on stage. Once the food is set up and ready, we have an open stage for players. This is an excellent night for people who haven't played at the club (you know who you are) to have a go while everyone else is eating and half ignoring them. It is traditionally a night where new duets are formed, members show us their 'other' skills and we have a good entertaining night.

Fleetwood Accordion Festival

Why not have a nice day out at The NAO North West Accordion Festival which takes place at The Marine Hall, Fleetwood, on Sunday November 27th, from 9am onwards, followed by an evening concert featuring the various section winners. The day is organised by Gina Brannelli and, as usual, there will be a trade show. This is a chance for a day out at Fleetwood listening to some good accordion playing and then taking a stroll into town to visit the market before returning for more accordion music. The day finishes with an evening concert. For further information or for an application form if you want to enter the competition, email: accordions@btinternet.com or telephone Gina on 01253 822046 and I'll probably see you there.. For those who haven't been to this before, non players are most welcome as you provide the audience for those entering the accordion competitions.
