Leyland Accordion Club - 17th August 2005

Our August Concert

Our August concert was as usual a great local players concert, we had a wide variety of talent on show starting with some great playing from Bill Agnew, including Elmers Tune, Mona Lisa, Release Me, Oh Boy, Fernando, Birth Of The Blues, Dark Town Strutters Ball, Frankie & Johnny and finally Music Music Music. Bill had set the standard and Basil Berry kept it up with In The Mood, Moonlight Serenade, At Last, Elmers Tune and Serenade In Blue. Gordon was next onto the stage playing Julida Polka, My Treasure and Vienna Forever. Our next act was Polyglot (meaning a person having speaking, reading, or writing knowledge of several languages). Polyglot was composed of our own Fritz on accordion, along with his friends Roger on electric double bass and Linda on vocals. They played and sang Bery Vagabunden, Maids When You're Young and Silver Hammer. It was the first time we have had a folk trio on stage and they went down well. It was now time for our break. After the break, Alan Gelling played a selection of tunes, including The Northern Lights Of Old Aberdeen. Colin Ensor then played Music Maestro Please, I Wont Tell A Soul I Love You, Pavements Of Paris and Who's Taking You Home Tonight. John McCormick played La Cumparsita followed by Jean Southern playing Carte Postale and a musette piece. After the break, Ann Parker played Black Mask Waltz, Kevana Tango and Beautiful Days. Rebecca Parker then followed her mother, playing Puffin Billy and Bianca Capanna. There ws just time for me to play one tune while the buskers set up on the dance floor and Jay got her music ready at the keyboard. We ended the evening with a 15 minute selection of pieces from the buskers who did an excellent job. Thanks to all who played, as usual we had a great time playing for ourselves, the last of us finally left the club at about 11.40pm David Batty

Peppa Pig

On Monday 26th of September, on Channel 5 TV, there is a cartoon called Peppa Pig. It starts at 08:15 am and runs for ten minutes. Mummy and Daddy Pig find an old box in the attic. It is full of musical instruments. Mummy plays the violin, Daddy plays the accordion, and Peppa bangs the drum. But no-one is able to get a note out of the French horn. I don't know if you'll get any tips from the accordionist but I thought it was worth a mention in here.

Sonola For Sale

At our last concert, a chap brought an accordion to the club to see if he could sell it, he still has the Sonola 120 bass accordion for sale at £300 ono. If you are interested then Telephone 07967 588172.

Opera At The Pub

Fresco Fresco Italian restaurant in Town Road, Croston is holding an opera evening shortly. They will be serving a six course gourmet dinner while you listen to favourite opera pieces performed by Vittorio Pascarella from Naples. Telephone 01772 601100 for details.

This Wednesday

Our concert this Wednesday features the remarkable talents of David Vernon (see details of David earlier in this newsletter) who is travelling down from Scotland to play for us. David, who is one of the countrys top players, will have his CD's on sale; but I don't think I will be using them to try to emulate his playing. Bring your friends along for a great night out on Wednesday. The doors open at 7.30pm for an 8pm start. There will be the usual coffee, tea, raffle, good company and entertainment. See you there on Wednesday. David Batty

Bob Dylan

For those of you into folk music, and especially fans of Bob Dylan, there is a programme on BBC 2 next Monday, the 26th of September, called No Direction Home. This 1 hour 55 minute programme is the story of Bob Dylan, directed by Martin Scorsese, from a rock 'n' roll loving kid in the Midwest to his arrival as a major force in the world of folk music. Including unseen footage and rare recordings, in-depth interviews and revealing photographs, this film tells the story of one man's journey placing it within the greater canvas of human events. This programme continues on the following day, Tuesday 27th September, at 9pm to 10.30pm.

Celilidh Evening

On Sunday when I spoke to Daniel Hinchliffe, there were still ten tickets available for the Celilidh on 15th October with Rob Thorn and his band at Sutton Village Hall, Main Street, Sutton In Craven, West Yorkshire. (Near Keithley). There is a late bar with Pie & Peas being served at half time. Doors open at 7.30pm for an 8.30pm start.
Telephone Daniel Hinchcliffe on 01535 635074 for further details. If you're not going to the Pontins festival at Blackpool, then this is a chance for you to let your hair down elsewhere. Ps. I had one or two people asking me how to pronounce Ceilidh, it's pronounced Kay-Leigh and it's a musical get together with music and dancing, usually with drink as standard and food as an optional extra.

Our Website

Our internet website has had 84075 vistors as at 18th of September 2005, that's 1130 visitors to the main page of our website since last month. We have had a lot of contacts from accordionists who have just discovered our site. The www.accordionfestival.com site is getting busy as more people find out about it as a place to visit for up to date information on UK accordion festivals; and our radio station has had 1066 listener hours in the last month. I was pleased that a commercial radio station in Ireland has added a link on their website to our website. They are the station that also broadcasts over the Internet at www.midwestirishradio.com if you want to tune in to listen to lots of good music. They told me that the kettle is on if I vist them when I am next in Ireland, and I simply can't turn down the offer of a cup of coffee !

David Vernon

A full-time professional for many years, David has performed at musical events and festivals all over the UK and abroad, including Canada, USA, India, Middle East, Poland, Switzerland, Iceland, France and Denmark among others - most recent being a tour of New Zealand in June 2005 with Scottish folk group “Crooked Jack”.
He recently won an award in the Edinburgh Festival for his role in “Song and Dance Man”, a theatre production about the life and music of Austrian composer “Gustav Mahler”. David has three solo recordings to his credit, and can be seen performing in the Robert Duvall movie “A Shot at Glory”.
David will be our guest artist this Wednesday night when he travels down from Edinburgh. He will have CDs on sale during the concert and this promises to be a great night. Make sure you turn up early for a decent seat.

Christmas Carols

I know that Summer is only just leaving us, but it's probably the best time to start dusting off those Christmas carols for a bit of an airing during your practice sessions. Then you will be ready for all those bookings in December. You have been forewarned, it's not far away !

From Saturday 24 September to Saturday 8 October, people will be able to enjoy an exciting range of entertainment that is sure to have something to tempt all ages and tastes. Comedy, dance, drama, live bands, visual arts, literature and theatre are just some of the many events that will be taking place throughout the two weeks. Also featured is the celebrated one-act play festival, written by new writers and performed by local theatre and drama groups. The one act plays have been a hit at the festival over the previous years and this year promises even more great local theatre. The events have been organised by the West Lancashire Community Arts Organisation, a group made up of representatives of arts groups, in partnership with West Lancashire District Council. Cllr. David Westley, Portfolio Holder for Community Services, said: "The annual West Lancs Community Arts Festival once again promises to bring two weeks of high quality arts from both professionals and amateurs. Now in it's fourth year, the festival has been building a reputation for bringing a wide ranging and diverse programme of events to the district, and this year will show the continued growth and support for the arts in West Lancs." The Festival programme will be launched on Saturday 10th September, with performances and activities in Ormskirk Town Centre and Skelmersdale Concourse between 10am and 4pm. For a copy of the programme, and some great entertainment, make sure you get down to either town centre. If you speak to an organiser, tell them that Leyland Accordion Club told you about the event, then they might inform us about it in future....
