Leyland Accordion Club - 20th July 2005

Our July Concert

Our July concert started with Tom Bennett playing Rhapsody In Blue and A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square. Anne Parker then gave us Gavotte In C and Sonatina No. 1 in G. Our next player Basil Berry played I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm, before leaving the stage to our guest artist Tony Marchell. Tony last played for us in our Highfield days in May 2000 and his return was long overdue. Tony plays an electronic accordion, has backing tracks on mini disks accompanying him, and he wears a headset microphone because he sings along with most of the songs he plays. His first spot of the evening started with the Neil Diamond song Beautiful Noise and the oldie What Do You Want To Make Those Eyes At Me For. Then it was on to a Russian medley which included The Volga Boatmen Song and Sabre Dance. Changing pace, Hava Nagila was followed by the more modern You Are Always On My Mind which was a hit for The Petshop Boys. It was over to Ireland next with Whiskey In The Jar. Delilah was then followed by a couple of Glen Miller numbers, At Last and Moonlight Serenade. It was now time for the break, so Tony finished his first half with Penny Arcade. After the break, we were entertained by Alan Gelling playing Lichtenstein Polka, Londonderry Air and Brahm's Lullaby. Johnny Coleclough was our next player with a German selection, Those Were The Days, Lily Marlene, Falling In Love Again, Ecstacy Tango and Masquerade. It was almost time for Tony to return to the stage, but first we had Colin playing Down Forget Me Not Lane and Reine De Musette followed by myself playing something before giving the stage up to Tony for the second half of his performance. His second half started with I Love To Go A Wandering and Side By Side. Then it was on to Bier Keller songs including Eins Zwei Gsuffa. The next piece, You To Me Are Everything, was a hit for The Real Thing some years back. The reggae song, I'll Be Your Baby Tonight, was followed by Doo Wah Diddy and the Neil Diamond song Sweet Caroline. It was nearing the end of the night now and, to finish, Tony played the Showaddywaddy hit, Under The Moon Of Love. After cries of 'more' Tony offered to finish with I Just Want To Dance The Night Away, as various dancers bopped along the dance floor doing country and western line dancing. It had been a great entertaining night, showing how the accordion can be used to play a wide variety of styles of music from traditional through 1950's to present day songs. I look forward to Tony's return in the not too distant future. David Batty

September Guest Artist

I have booked David Vernon as our guest artist for our September concert night. This is the first time I have known David play in the area so I'm pleased to have booked him for Leyland. David comes from Edinburgh so it is more difficult to book him than to book a local artist who can drive home after the concert. It was about two or three years ago that I first spoke to David about playing at Leyland and, finally, next month you will realise it was worth the wait to get him. David will have CDs on sale during the concert and this promises to be a great night. Make sure you turn up early for a decent seat.

Tony Marchell

Our last guest artist Tony Marchell was playing in The Crofters pub in Leyland last night. I went along to reunite him with one of his stands which he had left at the club last month, and to listen to him being a pub entertainer. The night was similar to the night we had at the accordion club, but Tony alternated between guitar and accordion during the evening instead of doing a full accordion programme. The night went very well, the crowd were singing and dancing. My ears have finally stopped ringing. The volume was far higher than at our club last month, but the crowd were rowdier at the pub so that was to be expected. All in all, it was a great night out.

New Local Accordion Festival

The Rhyl and Bridlington festivals are no more. They have been replaced by one festival at Lytham St Annes. This new festival is organised by Gina Branelli and Loretta Rolston in partnership. The festivals are to be held at Pontins Holiday Centre at Lytham St. Annes (near Blackpool). There are going to be two festivals per year, six months apart from each other. The first festival is to be held from Friday 14th, to Monday the 17th of October 2005 (just 60 days to go). The second festival is to be held from Friday, 31st March, to Monday 4th of April 2006. With two festivals held six months apart, it gives people the choice of going to either one, or to both of the festivals. There seems to be a great variety of events at these festivals and I have taken the following list from the festival website.
International Artistes From Italy, France And Portugal, After Hours In The Victoria Pub, MidnightTour By Luxury Coach Of Blackpool Illuminations, Accordion Basics Workshop, The Art Of Duet Playing, Style And Technique Workshop, Beginners/Advanced Workshops, Master Classes Graded, Stage Tricks And Repertoire, To Do Or Not To Do, Stagecraft Conduct, Stage Presentation, Orchestral Workshops, Songs Of Praise, The Young Musicians Workshop, Music Through The Centuries, Buskers And Free And Easy Sessions, Question Time, Welcome To The Festival Party, Cocktail Music, Spectacular Evening Concerts, An Audience With Jack Emblow, Club Junior Workshops And Activities, Accordion Auction, Ballroom Dancing, Sequence Dancing, Scottish Dancing, Fancy Dress With A Musical Theme - Prize For The Most Imaginative Outfit, Evening Dinner With Music, An Open Stage, Free And Easy Sessions, Early Evening Entertainment - Cocktail Music From 7pm. The workshop leaders and performers listed so far are Alastair Cameron, Andrew Figg, Amarylis, Daniele Ravaglia, David Batty, David Vernon, Gina & Romany Rye, Harry Hussey, Jack Emblow & Tony Compton, Jean Hanger, John Leslie, Nelson Lebre,Raymond Bodell, Stefan Bodell
The Flores Brothers, The Petulengros, The 2 J's, and William Langton. The traders so far booked for the festival include Accordion Exchange & Music World, Rolston Accordions, Accordion Times and News, Electronic Accordions, Geoff Holter Accordions, Accordions of London, Music Room and Charnwood Music. The cost of the festival is £169 for the chalet, including breakfast and evening meals. This gives you access to all the concerts, workshops and events. If you want to go on the Blackpool Illuminations coach trip then that will cost an extra £9.95. I think we are fortunate to have a big festival being arranged on our doorstep, many people will be travelling the length of the country to attend. If you would like to attend, then please contact either Gina Branelli on 01253 778764, or Loretta Rolston on 01501 820910. Alternatively, you can visit www.accordionfestival.com where you will be given a countdown to the festival, along with contact details for the organisers and links to their websites. If you are planning to go to the festival then, by mentioning Leyland Accordion Club when you book your place, you will be given chalets near to people you know instead of being scattered across the camp. Please tell other people about this new festival so that we can ensure its success in future.
