Leyland Accordion Club - 15th December 2004

Our December Concert

Our December concert was our local players / Christmas concert. As usual we had a wide variety of entertainment from our local players, including some duets that we don't get throughout the year. My own clarinet and accordion duet with colin Ensor was the first time most people had seen a clarinet with an inhaler fastened to the side of it with an elastic band! After about an hour, the food which had been brought in by all who were in attendance was unwrapped and ready to eat. As the lights went up we all tucked into a great pile of food as one or two players used the cover of people eating to do their bit on stage without lots of staring eyes on them. The rest of the night saw the lights up, people talking and eating while the players organised themselves to play when they saw a gap in the entertainment. I have to thank all that turned up to play and especially those who brought food along for our Jacob's Join. This has worked very well each year and is an excellent way to provide a slap up meal without having to charge extra on the door. As mentioned elsewhere in this newlsetter, Mike Ellis is trying to locate a cake he saw at the party.

Our next concert this Wednesday the 19th of January looks like it is going to be an entertaining night with lots of singalong pieces that should inspire you to think of tunes that could be added to your repertoire. See you there on Wednesday. David Batty

Roland FR7 Manual

If you are interested in buying the Roland FR5 or FR7 accordion then you might be interested in this web page on the Internet www.roland.com/products/en/_support/om.cfm?ln=en&dsp=0&iCncd=481 This will allow you to download the full user manual to the above accordion. This electronic version of the manual will also be useful to those of you who haven't bought the accordion but who might be interested in learning how to use it for when you do get a go on one. Alternatively you can just go on www.roland.com and search for the user manual instead of typing in the above direct URL.

Irish Music Course

Vincent Jordan has started teaching an Irish Music course at South Birmingham College. The NCFE course in Performance Skills, which is the first of its kind, involves instruments ranging from the violin and whistle to the piano accordion."People come along with all different instruments and we just help them to progress, they have to work very hard," said Vincent. Vincent, whose five children all play Irish music, has been a tutor at the college for two years, and, after three decades of playing the piano accordion, the virtuoso scooped a gold medal in August 2003 at a music competition in Ireland. "We would be delighted to welcome people along to the new foundation course in January, and the main thing is they don't have to be Irish," he said. Anyone interested in signing up for the part-time course should contact Vincent on 0121 743 6958 or e-mail vince_irishmusic@hotmail.com.

Basil's Accordion For Sale

Basil Berry is selling his 48 Bass red Parrot 2 voice accordion. This is being sold with a hard case for £150. Basil is selling his accordion because he has been over to Yorkshire to buy a new one. Telephone Basil on 01253 733503 or see him at the club on Wednesday.

Club Membership

Many thanks to those of you who have already paid your membership. The rest of you still have this Wednesday's January meeting to update your membership for 2005. The annual membership of £5, which is unchanged from previous years despite the forthcoming postage increases, gives you cheaper admission on concert nights and it also ensures you get this newsletter delivered each month.

This Wednesday

This month I have booked Robert Burton as our guest artist. Robert travels round the country playing Italian, Spanish, French, Bier Keller and singalong music so we can expect a good entertaining mix of music. Make sure you are in good singing voice and please bring along a friend or two for an entertaining evening of song and music. I booked Robert as a contrast to our recent mainly classical concert. I try to mix and match the artists as much as possible to ensure that we see a broad range of styles and types of music. This is Robert's debut at the club so I hope you can make it on Wednesday to welcome him. Doors open at 7.30pm so make sure you turn up early for a good seat. I look forward to seeing you there at our first concert of 2005

Chorley Radio Station

A bid has been made to reopen Chorley FM radio station. It will be spring before the Community Radio Group will know if their licence application is successful. If they do get the licence, the radio station will broadcast 60% music 40% talk to listeners in a five mile radius which will include Leyland at its outer limit. The exciting part is that local community and arts groups can get involved by making their own programmes for broadcast! Does anyone think that their might be some accordion related programming suggestions heading their way?

Accordions At Witney

A weekend of workshops focusing on traditional music from Scotland, England, Spain, Sweden and Ireland forms the basis of 'Accordions at Whitney', set for the 19th and 20th February 2005. For further information email info@handsonmusic.org.uk The tutors, who will all be using piano accordions, are Sandy Brechin (Scottish recording artiste), Murray Grainger (graduate of the Royal Academy of Music, London), Sam Pirt (folk musician), Dave Townsend (best known as a concertina player, but also a fine accordionist), and Karen Tweed (pictured), a specialist at both Irish and Scandinavian traditional music. I have a limited number of leaflets on this event. Ask at the club on Wednesday if you want a leaflet.

Tony Marchell

I have booked Tony Marchell as our guest artist on the 20th of July 2005. Tony last played for us at The Highfield in 10th of May 2000 which means that it will be over five years since we heard him! I had no idea it was that long ago, otherwise I would have booked him much sooner. Make sure you have the date in your diary.

Cartoon About Accordion Lessons

You might be interested in a ten minute cartoon on Granada TV on the 28th of January 2005 at 15.50 to 16.00 (Ten to four in old money). The animation called Pet Alien is the story of Tommy who gets out of taking his enforced accordion lessons by making a deal with Swanky who is a natural on the accordion.

Club Mascot

This is the photograph of Harry Hussey, Wylie Coyote, Steve Roxton and Romano Viazzani that I mentioned in last month's newsletter. I have sent a copy of this photograph to various accordion magazines with a paragraph describing the night this picture was taken. Hopefully one of them will like it enough to use it on their cover (in colour). It is not often you would get a chance to see these players together with Wylie Coyote (our club mascot) on his accordion!

Our Website

Our internet website has had 75565 vistors as at 16th January 2005, that's 1332 visitors to the main page of our website since last month. I just checked on Google and found that there are currently 1670 other websites on the internet that mention our club by name. Our radio station has had 872 hours of listening by 1401 people in December. There are 1395 people who have our radio station listed in their station presets so that they can easily find us. I am pleased with the increase in visitors to the site and to the radio station, but in another months time I will attempt to improve our profile even further.

Chester Accordion Club

Chester Accordion Club normally have just two guest artists per year and they don't send out a newsletter to all members prior to their meetings. This has left them with money being collected every month but not being spent. To stop the money accumulating even further, they have decided to scrap admission fees for a while. Admission to Chester Accordion Club will be free to members and non members alike for the whole of 2005. Their first free meeting, which is also their AGM, is on the 25th of January. Their first guest artist of the year has not been confirmed yet but it is expected that she will be playing on the 29th of March. I will let you know the name as soon as the booking is confirmed. I think it's a good idea for clubs that accumulate money to waive admission fees. I have the view that money collected at accordion club should be spent on guest artists, raffle prizes, newsletters and other things to benefit all that attend. It's nice to see Chester decide to do this instead of accumulating money, I hope it brings in a lot more new people through the doors. I am a member of Chester club and I do attend there when work allows, if anyone would like to visit Chester Accordion Club, but you are unsure of the way, then why not arrange to follow me one night?

Accordion Makers Website

Stephen McKelvey from Norwich has just built his first accordion from scratch (apart from the reeds) and he is so pleased with it that he has decided not only to make some more, but also to create a website for other people interested in making their own accordion to share in his ideas and techniques. If making your own accordion interests you then visit http://www.19larchclose.freeserve.co.uk/acc/

Eastbourne Accordion Festival

It's not long to go now before the second Eastbourne Accordion Festival on the 18th to 21st February at The Cumberland Hotel, in the south coast resort of Eastbourne. The guest artistes will include Harry Hussey, John Leslie, Lisa Lee Leslie, John Romero, Charlie Watkins and Gennaro Fiondella. The trade show will include Accordion World, Carillon Studios, Ketron, Orla UK, SR Technology, Trevani, and Charlie Watkins. Activities throughout the weekend include workshops, trade demonstrations and concerts. Telephone John Romero on 08450 633700. Ring now as there are only six rooms left!

The 2005 Celtic Connections Festival

This is a three-week long festival of music, song and dance which takes place from the 12th to the 30th of January in Glasgow. There is an extensive list of national and international guest artistes which includes many accordionists and players of other free reed instruments. These include Cherish the Ladies, an all-female band of Irish American musicians, concertina player Simon Thoumire, melodeon player Andy Cutting, Irish traditional musicians ‘The Young Tradition - Comhaltas’, The Emily Smith Band, and accordionists Phil Cunningham, Karen Tweed, Sharon Shannon and Fergie MacDonald. See Glasgow tourist office for more details.

Cake with Jelly Beans

Mike Ellis would like to find the person who supplied the cake with jelly beans on it at the Christmas party. Mike's intention is really to find out where to buy the cake because he has hunted all over the place but can't find it. Either contact Mike at the club or let us know.
