Leyland Accordion Club - 17th December 2003

Our December Concert

As usual, our December concert was our Christmas let your hair down session. The Jacob's Join food was placed at the back of the room as people brought in boxes, plates and bags to add to the feast. Our opening artist was Dugald McCallum playing A Man and A Woman, Moonlight Serenade and Radeski March. I don't have most of the details of what people played so this December club report is going to be very vague. Bill Agnew was next on the stage followed by Tom Bennett playing Jingle Bells and Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer before playing and singing a Christmas song. David Rigby then played Spinning Wheel, Highland Cathedral, A Monologue and Whispering Hope. Ian Fralick played Wild Colonial Boy, Black Velvet Band, Irish Eyes and Oh Oh Antonio before Colin took to the stage to lead us up to the first break and time for the food to be uncovered. The rest of the night had the lights up while we ate food and listened to the players at the same time. Our first player after the food had been revealed was Phil Sanderson followed by Chick Stephen. Chick was followed by Anne Parker. Anne Agnew then made her debut on the stage followed by a lineup of players including John McCormack, Alan Gelling, John Higham playing No Regrets, Derek Corlett, Harry Davies, myself and finally Bob Seed, Shirley Seed and Bill Agnew playing together before the buskers took to the stage and the floor to play a good selection of singalong tunes. We finally finished at about 11.20pm and were cleared up before midnight. I apologise for the vagueness of last month's playlist but I was dealing with food, plates and kitchen stuff and forgot to write down the titles people played. It was a nice ending to 2003. Now it's 2004 and we are set to have another great year of accordion entertainment with the usual mixture of guest artists, practice nights and chances for our own players to develop their skills and gain more experience on the local players' nights. Our 2003 picnic was a great success and we now have extra-club activities to look forward to in 2004. I hope to encourage more duets to form this year and aim to promote more cross club activities with the clubs that welcome exchange members. David Batty

Learning Jazz

Those of you who would like to learn about Jazz theory will be interested in a website which aims to provide structured lesson material on the subject. The website www.jazz-theory.co.uk explains chords, improvisation and a lot more. Whether you are new to the subject or an experienced player, I am sure that there is something on this Internet website which you will find interesting.

Eastbourne Accordion Festival

A couple of you asked me to clarify something about the Eastbourne Accordion Festival. It is true what I said in the last newsletter that you pay a deposit of £64 per person, then you pay the balance of your bill on the day of departure from the hotel. This is so that people who have experienced worry about their money at the hands of other festival organisers can feel secure in their booking. Further details can be had from John Romero on 01323 733700 or pick up a booking form at the club on Wednesday. I have lent John a URL until after the festival. I own www.accordionfestival.co.uk and have temporarily pointed it at his website to make it easy for you to find.

Accordion For Sale

Ken Klepalo is selling a 96 Bass Weltmeister accordion. This is a 4 voice musette accordion in black. The accordion has 11 treble couplers and 5 bass couplers. Our Website

Our internet website has had 64125 visitors as at the 18th of January 2004, that’s 1008 visitors since last month. Our accordion radio station is also doing well, bringing in lots of visitors to the website. We haven't had any TV or radio stations contacting us recently so I think I am going to have to give the website a push to them shortly. We do get a lot of people buying and selling accordions on our website noticeboard, I'm glad to say that it is well used. The noticeboard gets around 1000 visitors before it gets a message posted to it! That's 999 people visiting it before one person writes a message. At least this gives the people who post there, a good audience for their free advert although some of the visitors are from outside the country.

Guest Artist Bookings

I have booked Paul Chamberlain to play for us this month as our guest artist. On the 21st of July I have booked Ken Astin as our guest artist. I have other players lined up for our other nights for the rest of the year but I have to wait for some confirmations before I give you details. I can say that I have a couple of new players lined up who you won't have heard before. Further details will be released when I have confirmed the bookings.

Accordion Stickers

We now have some accordion stickers advertising the club and the fact that you are an accordionist. These stickers, which are suitable for sticking onto hard accordion cases or car bumpers, have the club name, telephone number and website address on them in red letters on a white background. Thanks to Harold (who also had the contact to get these produced) some of these stickers are now going up and down the motorway and across Lancashire on the backs of wagons and trailers. Hopefully they will help bring more accordionists together and give our members a chance to meet new people who spot their stickers. Ask at the club for a sticker on any of our club nights. I have a few more great promotional items currently in production, hopefully one of them will be ready by next month, watch out for details in this newsletter and at our club nights.

Bridlington Accordion Festival

Edinburgh

Last week I went up to Edinburgh for a break and to find some accordion music. One evening of Internet research later and I had most of the break planned. Arriving in Edinburgh by train at 12 noon gave five hours to settle in before leaving the city for a 28 mile bus ride heading East to West Barns to visit West Barns Accordion Club where Gary Blair was playing as a guest artist. The 28 mile bus ride cost just £3 which amazed me. After a great night out at West Barns Accordion Club we got a lift back to Edinburgh as previously arranged over the phone before I left Leyland. The following two nights werespent in different pubs in the city which featured folk music and sessions every night of the week. The final night was a pub session with Sandy Brechin on Accordion with other players on low whistle, drum, guitar, ulliean pipes and other instruments. This weeks guest artist Paul Chamberlain arrived in Edinburgh on the Saturday night, but he was playing at a private function so we had to give his performance a miss. If you plan to visit Edinburgh then look in the pubs for a copy of a free leaflet called 'The Gig Guide' which will tell you were to go any night of the week to hear folk or accordion music.

This Wednesday

This Wednesday we see the return of Paul Chamberlain to the club. Paul, who last played for us just over a year ago, plays a wide variety of music from classical to Scottish. The doors open at 7.30pm, make sure that you turn up early for a good seat. It's better to turn up early so that you can have a chat and meet new people before the concert starts. If you see someone who you don't know, then why not say hello to them. Yu never know who you might meet but aslso it helps new visitors to the club when someone speaks to them. I look forward to seeing you there...
