Our May ConcertOur May concert started with Colin Ensor playing The Maigret Theme, Sweetheart Of All My dreams, We Just Couldn't Say Goodnight and Sentimental Over You. Dugald McCallum was next with excellent versions of Rendevous A Panane, Death Or Glory and Tailspin. It was now time for our guest artist Alexander Korbakov to play, he started with Light And Shade, Turkish Rondo, Cavatina, Figaro from the Barber Of Seville and Ave Maria. The excellent fingerwork continued with Grande Valse Brillante op 18, Waltz op 64 no 2 by Chopin Trisch-trasch polka by strauss and Bachs Prelude & Fugue no. 12. After Valse Triste the speed increased with The Sabre Dance. The next piece was Baba-Yaga which was part of Muggorgsky's Pictures At An Exhibition. It was now coming up to break time and, to finish, Alexander played The Melody from Dr Zhivago and Fiddle Faddle. After the break, I played two pieces before Geoff Lloyd from Chester Accordion Club played a selection of pieces. When Alexander returned, he was dressed in full Russian costume with a second accordion with bells on it. The music continued with Katiusha, Monti's Czardas, a Russian folk song The Steppe Is All Around followed by two other folk songs Zhigulie and Stradania. The next piece Dark Eyes was a well known tune with variations added by Alexander. We left Russia for the popular melody Wheels followed by Kalinushka, La Paloma, Those Were The Days, Sirtaki, Letka Enka and finally Kalinka. After much applause Alexander's encore piece was The Flight Of The Bumblebee. We had enjoyed a great night with Alexander. The night was made even better by a visit from 14 members of Chester Accordion Club who arrived by coach. It was really nice to meet them, we have promised make a visit to see them at their club soon. David Batty |
Editors ColumnOh no, not another Editors Column! I'm afraid so. I have mentioned the Irish comptition in here because there will be accordionists playing in the competitions and secondly because this is a national finals so there should be some good players of accordion, violin, tin whistle, flute, piano and other instruments. The other main event though has to be our picnic/concert. this annual event is for club members, non members, people from other clubs and any friends or family you want to bring down. It is a nice family day out, plenty of room for the kids to play near you while you listen to the music and a great chance for some socialising. Please make a good effort to be there, the more the merrier. Make a date in your diary today so you don't forget. Finally if you know of someone who you Think would be interested in visiting the club, please pick up a spare newsletter or a leaflet, they are usually on the table near to the door on concert nights. This WednesdayThis Wednesday is our local players concert. This is a chance for all our own players to have their ten minutes of fame. If you normally visit only on guest artist nights then why not try our local players concerts as well, we might not be professionals but we do have a lot of fun on these nights. If you are a player then don't forget to bring your accordion along. We have recently seen players making their debut at the club, and it's nice to hear new players, even if they are nervous. The buskers group is a great confidence builder for players, and it is also one of the parts of the night that many people look forward to. If you are nervous at playing in public, then why not sit in with the buskers to gain some experience without being put on the spot. I know that there are a couple of items for sale being brought on Wednesday, so if you have an item for sale then why not bring it along for others to see it during the breaks. Don't forget to bring along any friends and family who you think might enjoy our nights, I look forward to seeing you there.D |
Our WebsiteOur internet website has had 59015 visitors as at the 158h of June 2003, that’s 765 visitors since last month. The series of wrap around photographs I took at the club will be added to the site shortly so those of you who were there will be immortalised on the web for many months or years until I take a new set of photographs.

Our Annual Picnic ConcertOur annual picnic/concert is to be held at it's usual venue of Hollins Farm, Hollins Lane, Leyland on Sunday the 13th of July 2003. As usual, we plan to have the good weather. Previous events apart, from one, have all seen baking sunshine, people getting sunburn and one case of mild sunstroke! For those of you who have not attended one of these events before, there is no admission fee, simply turn up from 12 noon on Sunday the 13th of July. Some people will be arriving with their caravans the day before. The venue is marked on the back page of this newsletter with an arrow and also on the map below with a big cross. Drive your car into the field which will be signposted and park with a good view of the stage. The entertainment starts as soon as someone decides to get their accordion out and start playing. There is no format to the day, people bring their own picnic, some bring seats and fold down tables, others sit in their cars to listen to the music. I aim to do the usual of broadcasting the music on FM radio and playing it through my sound system at the same time. Please bring your friends and family to this day out which starts any time after 12 noon and finishes when you decide to leave. We might be playing until 8 or 9 pm if the weather and the light hold out.
