Leyland Accordion Club - 16th April 2003

Our April Concert

Our April concert was a local players concert opened with Dugald McCallum playing Reine De Musette, Radetsky March and Les Triolets. Our second player Anne Parker then took to the stage playing Loveliest Night Of The Year, Accordion Polka and Something Stupid. Our next player was in the toilet so I stood in for him as I played a couple of tunes until Jeff returned. Jay and Jeff Ward then played San Antonio Rose, I Have A Dream, Love Letters, Oh Marie, On This Night Of 1000 Stars and Lady Be Good. The buskers then joined Jay and played us up to the first break of the night. After the break Chick Stephens played Irish Rover, Fields Of Athenry, The Leaving Of Liverpool, Irish Eyes and Wild Rover. Elaine followed Chick and played Irish Eyes, My Girls A Yorkshire Girl and Du Du Leigst Mir Im Hertzen. Alan Gelling then played the Theme From The Moulin Rouge and Honey Honey Don't Stop. Our last player before the second break was Harry Davies who played Coat Of Many Colours, Memories and a German tune, the title of which he did not know. After the second break Charlie Southall played Tulips From Amsterdam, Maggie and Fields Of Athenry. Colin Ensor was our next player, his repertoire included Under Paris Skies, an unknown tune, Yesterdays Dreams, Pal Of My Cradle Days and Dark Island. It was almost time to finish, we had overrun but we still managed to fit Phil Sanderson in playing a couple of tunes before our last soloist Bill Agnew took to the stage and played while the buskers setup on the floor in front of him. The buskers finished the night off playing a selection of well known tunes as the audience joined in a last singalong.

Editors Column

I sat down to write the newsletter, and as usual I didn't have a clue what it would contain. You would think that after producing 66 issues of your favourite source of accordion information I would be more organised. I have just completed it at midnight on Sunday and I am writing this column just before I go to print. There is a wealth of information in here about festivals, activities, events and other clubs to visit. When I sat back to read the newsletter after I had finished, I realised that, as well as providing information on our instrument, I am creating a social diary for likeminded people to get together. One of the good things about the accordion is that with a few notable exceptions, there are a lot of nice people who are attracted by our instrument, our music and what we do. I think that as accordinists, we have a better than average share of nice people in our social scene. I know that I will always find some people who think 'us and them' when talking about accordion clubs but I leave that mentality to football supporters, I don't subscribe to that type of thinking. I would like to thank all those people I meet at our own, and other clubs, for making the world a nicer place to live.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo

The well known South African vocal group Ladysmith Black Mambazo who joined up with Paul Simon for his Graceland Project used a young accordionist Shongshilo to open up their UK concerts. Ladysmith are well known in the folk and pop world, their use of an accordionist to open their concerts can only do good for our instrument's exposure.

Bellows Buttons And Keys Club

The next meeting of The Bellows Buttons And Keys Club is on Tuesday, the 3rd of June 2003, at The Royal British Legion, opposite the bus terminal at Cleveleys. The club starts at 8pm and continues until 11pm. Telephone 01253 822046 for details.

This Wednesday

Our guest artist this Wednesday is Alexander Korbakov who is currently on a tour of the UK from his native Russia. Alexander, who comes from St. Petersburg, is a player in The Moscow State Orchestra. Those of you who are lucky enough to have heard him before, will know he is a great player. The night will be a mixture of accordion pieces from around Europe with a good mixture of Russian Folk and some classical pieces thrown in the mix. Alexander has just released his new CD this month and will have a supply of them on sale on Wednesday. You will need to be there early if you want a good seat. The doors will be open at 7.30pm. I am looking forward to meeting about 14 members of Chester Accordion Club who have booked a minibus to come and see Alexander play at Leyland. I know that you will make them welcome at the club. If you see someone you have not met before, then please go and say hello to them.
I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, why not bring a friend along

Advertising

If you want to buy or sell an accordion then don't forget that an advert in this newsletter is free of charge. I don't check to see if it's a club member selling the item, as long as it's an accordion or accordion accessory then you are welcome to send me the advert and I will publish it in the next newsletter. You can send me your advert in the post or bring it to the club with you. Adverts from members of other clubs are welcome, as are details of other clubs activities, festivals or events.

Harry Hussey

I have booked Harry Hussey as our guest artist on the 16th of July. The last time Harry played at the club he played a first half of midi music and the second half of acoustic accordion which pleased both those who like midi and the people who prefer acoustic accordion. Some of us went to see Harry recently at Blackpool when he was playing at Alan Venn's Jazz weekend. We had a great night, Harry was, as usual in his 'jukebox' mode. For those of you who have not seen Harry, he asks the audience to call out what he should play next. So start thinking now of those tunes you have longed to hear.

Chester Accordion Club

I have asked Chester Accordion Club to keep me informed about their events and nights, it's about time we paid them another visit. I think that they have got over our last visit by now! I will arrange a date for us to drop in on them and I will publicise details in the newsletter. You will meet about 14 of them on Wednesday when they come to visit Leyland to see Alexander Korbakov so make sure you welcome them to the club and I know that they will do the same when we visit Chester. Although it would be nice, I'm not worried about visiting them on a guest artist night. It will be nice to go and hear a new bunch of players on one of their local players nights as well. Maybe we can make a couple of visits soon to both types of night, if you are interested then let Elaine know when you see her on the door and I will arrange something with Chester.

Chester Folk Festival

Our Website

Our internet website has had 58250 visitors as at the 188h of May 2003, that’s 815 visitors since last month. I am rewriting the site at the moment and one of the things we need desperately is a new photograph of the club. We do have a wrap-around photograph of the club on the website but it still shows us in The Highfield! I will take a new set of photographs of everyone at the club on Wednesday. I will then stitch the photographs together in my computer to create one very wide photograph of the club for the website. This photograph is very important for our website as people thinking about visiting the club can take a look at the photograph and decide whether you look like a friendly bunch of people. Then, when they visit the club, they have an idea of what to expect. I will take a series of about five or six photographs on Wednesday (probably around or during the raffle time when the lights are on) so make sure that you are sat with someone your are supposed to be sat next to! Your smiling face will help bring more people in to the accordion club scene when they see you on the Internet.
