Our March ConcertOur March concert started with Basil Berry playing S'wunderful and I've Got You Under My Skin, Come Fly With Me and A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square. Colin Ensor was next to take to the stage, playing All Of Me. His next piece Auburn Waltz was something he heard and learnt from a Seamus Shannon Video. Colin's final two pieces were Fascination and Yesterday's Dreams. It was now time for our guest artist Julie Best to start her first half. Julie started with Fantasy Polka and My Florence. Her next piece Sprudel was a piece she got as a swap for Cuckoo Waltz. Les Triolets was followed by The Jacquline Waltz and a set of Scottish Reels which included The Masons Apron, Dark Island and the Bluebell Polka. The quality continued with Diana, Bambi Samba. On This Night Of A Thousand Stars. The accordion standard Bel Viso led Julie up to a set of Irish jigs which included Biddy Of Sligo. It was almost time for the first break of the evening and just time for two tunes from Julie. After Monty's Czardas she finished her first half with Gin & It. After the break, Tom Bennett played The Allo Allo and Maigret themes, then Dugald McCallum played Balajo and March Of The Miners. After I had played, it was time for Julie to start her second half. Her first pieces were Blaze Away, Elvira, The Luxembourg Polka, The Cuckoo Waltz and The Ornithologist. It was time to return to Scotland with The Gay Gordons, 79th Farewell To Gibraltar, Barren Rocks Of Aden and Atholl Gathering. The Frenchwaltz Zingarella and Highland Cathedral led nicely to Brusseler Spitzen and a medley which included Tulips From Amsterdam. Ballad Matinal and Ambiance Foray took us near to 11pm, just time to hear 12th Street Rag, The College and two other hornpipes, her final piece of the night was Beautiful Days. Thanks go to Julie for a great night which we will surely remember as we await her return. David Batty |
Our WebsiteOur internet website has had 57435 visitors as at the 12th of April 2003, that’s 710 visitors since last month. The radio station is doing well and receiving lots of listeners from all over the world. One chap from a furniture store warehouse in America wrote to me to tell me how much he likes the station. He told me that it is playing in his warehouse during the day, making work more enjoyable. It's nice to know that the radio station is bringing pleasure both at home and abroad. |

Our Music - Jeff and Jay WardJEFFMy first musical recollections were having a father who was really into music. He played violin and trumpet. As a young boy of around ten, I was given a 12 bass Pietro Accordion in blue mother of pearl for Christmas. Dad was pretty disappointed with me, as I couldn’t play a tune by the end of the day. I never did play very much. It was around the age of 25 that I heard some accordion music on the radio. I loved it and decided to buy an accordion and teach myself to play. This I enjoyed very much. I also had a vibraphone and played in a quartet with piano, bass player and drummer/vocalist, playing the George Shearing sound. Years later, the home electric organ came on the scene. I sold my accordion and bought a Hammond organ - which again I taught myself to play. Eventually, I built two Wersi organs and did not play an accordion for years. JAY I didn’t have the opportunity to be involved with music as a youngster – I was sent to tap dancing instead. This I really enjoyed, but always loved listening to music. When I was in my forties and bringing up a family on my own, I really needed a hobby. Music I thought, at last. A friend lent me an electronic organ. I had no idea how to play it and didn’t even know where ‘C’ was; so (never say die) I stuck all the letters on the keys and taught myself to play. I eventually saw an advert for a Wersi organ for sale and went along to see it. No prizes for guessing who I met. I didn’t buy it but married the owner instead. The things one will do to save a few bob! JEFF & JAY Just before we moved to Blackpool, ten years ago, we swapped a Hammond organ for an accordion and Jeff was back on the accordion scene again. Our family of instruments has increased since those days. We now have a Yamaha acoustic piano, 2 Technics Keyboards, a Sonatina piano accordion, Maugein button accordion, Galotta melodeon, guitar, flute, pan pipes, vibraphone, etc., etc. No furniture! Just sheet music everywhere. SHEER BLISS. We started playing together about 9 years ago. We met Sylvia (who comes to the club) and her husband, and made up a foursome entertaining in residential homes. We called ourselves “Friends in Harmony”. It was a laugh a minute. We were once given a cheque for “Friends in Need” (were they trying to tell us something, or did they guess)? When Sylvia’s husband became very poorly, we then had to play just the two of us. We began by busking in Freeport for 2 years. It was a good experience. We also played in St. Anne’s Band Stand each weekend, sometimes just for the seagulls on a wet day. We have played in numerous hotels and venues along the coast, but enjoy it most when we are background music for atmosphere. We do not play anywhere regularly now due to Jeff’s poor health, but music is still 100% of our life together. If anyone wants a cuppa, our kettle is always on, music fills the house, and the instruments are here to be played. We would love to see you. |

This WednesdayWe have a great local player's concert to look forward to this Wednesday. Our last local players' concert clashed with the start of the Blackpool Accordion Festival but was a great night out all the same. This month we have the return of those who could not make the last local players night because they were attending the festival. Local players don't forget to bring your accordions. Non players why not leave a tune request on the door, I will see if anyone knows it for you. I look forward to seeing you there. |
