Our May ConcertOur May concert started with David Rigby playing Loveliest Night Of The Year, Good Old Summertime, Snow Waltz, Spinning Wheel and Highland Cathedral. Our next player was Bernard Bamber playing Tennessee Waltz, Carolina Moon, Blaydon Races and Do Ye Ken John Peel. Our next player was Doug Inkpen who had made a special visit from Cambridge to see the club and visit his family at the same time. Doug played Petit Bal Du Samedi Soir Slow Slow March and Shy Serenade. I then went on the stage and played Black Mask Waltz and Sailors Hornpipe. Our guest artist George then returned for his second spot of the night, playing his Guerrini, he started with Snow Waltz and Search Light Tattoo. The music continued with Anchors Aweigh, I will Love You, Carte Postale, Return To Sorrento, Crazy, It's A Sin To Tell A Lie, Amazing Grace (UK and US Versions), Tarantella, Time After Time, Moon River, Danny Boy, The Gypsy, Once In A While, Sharpshooters March, St Louis Blues, Moulin Rouge and New York New York. It was now time for the break. After the break Colin Ensor played Down Forget Me Not Lane, Please and The Maigret Theme. Sara Daly then took to the stage and played Once Upon A December and Besame Mucho. As he was making a rare appearance at the club we got Doug Inkpen back on stage to play for us again, he played Genevieve and The Whistler & His Dog. It was Bill Agnews turn to play, he gave us Alpine Slopes, Cuckoo Waltz and Fly Like a Bird. Our guest artist George Syrett then started his second half, playing Kalinka, Besame Mucho, Spanish Eyes, Jealousy, Tango Celeste, Ecstasy, La Cumparsita, Amazing Grace, California In The Morning, April Showers, Tulips From Amsterdam, Lara's Theme, Lolita, Scotland The Brave, Blaze Away, Moonlight Serenade, What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life, If You Love, Missing You Already (Written By George himself), Rodrigues Guitar Concerto, Vaya Con Dios, Auf Wiedersehen and finally to finish he played Auld Lang Syne. This had been a great entertaining night and another one in the 'glad I didn't miss that night' category.David Batty |

Wild Lancashire Day - The grounds and gardens play host to a day of family fun, entertainment and amazing countryside displays and activities. The busy programme includes a farmers market, craft and outdoor living fair, music from the Silver Bell Brass Band and Accrington Pipe Band, a traditional marching pipers, donkey rides and dog display team. Childrens fun includes storytelling, magic and face-painting. This is a celebration of great Lancashire produce too, and theres an abundance of fantastic food and drink to sample including outdoor games, BBQ, hog roast, delicious picnic box lunches and of course the exquisite local produce dishes and tipples from the halls indoor restaurant- cafe and bar. Takes place Sunday 31st July 2011, 11am till 4pm.Tickets £4 for adults and £2 for children (includes entry to the hall). |

Blackpool Accordion Festival Reviewby Rob Howard: Accordions at the Castle took place May 15th to 20th at the Norbreck Castle, a large hotel in Blackpool, Lancashire, and proved to be a great success. Ably organized by Heather Smith, this festival included workshops: Beginners (Jean Hanger), Elementary (Rosemary Wright), Intermediate (Brian Jenkins), Jazz (Bert Santilly), Scottish (David Vernon), Buskers (Bert Santilly), Vintage (Jean Hanger), and Big Band (Romano Viazzani), and a trade show, and a buzz of enthusiasm prevailed throughout the proceedings. There were informal concerts in the afternoons and gala-type concerts each evening, featuring a dazzling array of talent that included Romano Viazzani, David Vernon (accordion) & Dick Lee (clarinet), Rosemary Wright, Bert Santilly, Stefan Andrusyschyn (accordion) & Denise Leigh (soprano), Harry Hussey, Ken Astin, and Scottish accordionist Roy Hendrie. All the guests were on top form, and the entertainment was second to none. The daily workshops a lot of fun, culminating in excellent performances at the final night’s concert in the ballroom by all the groups/orchestras. Most notable was the Glenn Miller music played by the Big Band, led by Romano Viazzani on Roland FR7X, and impressively augmented by Dick Lee on clarinet, Geoff Cook on sax, and Marj Howard on trumpet. The festival closed after midnight with those revellers still with some energy left dancing to the Scottish music of David Vernon, playing Heather Smith’s MusicTech digital accordion. We can also see the demographics of the viewers we get on the videos, 83% of viewers are male and 17% are female. 182 Years of AccordionThere was a short piece in the independant by Charles Nevin on Monday 23rd May "Today is the 182nd anniversary of the accordion, which was invented by an Armenian living in Austria, even if it is sometimes known as the English Concertina. My favourite player, always excepting Rolf Harris, naturally, was Cherry, a grandmother who used to perform in Blackpool with nothing on. She also played the xylophone, but found the accordion the most challenging, as you could give yourself quite a nasty nip if you weren't careful." (Information from wikipedia) The basic form of the Accordion is believed to have been invented in 1822 in Berlin by Christian Friedrich Ludwig Buschmann. An instrument called accordion was first patented in 1829 by Cyrill Demian who was Armenian.The piano accordion was played in German speaking regions, then all over Europe. Some early portable Instrument with piano keys had been invented in 1821, but it started to actually be played much later, and built its reputation from there. At that time in Vienna, mouth harmonicas with Kanzellen (chambers) had already been available for many years, along with bigger instruments driven by hand bellows. The diatonic key arrangement was also already in use on mouth-blown instruments. Demian's patent thus covered an accompanying instrument: an accordion played with the left hand, opposite to the way that contemporary chromatic hand harmonicas were played, small and light enough for travellers to take with them and used to accompany singing. The patent also described instruments with both bass and treble sections, although Demian preferred the bass-only instrument owing to its cost and weight advantages. |

MarMir3 - YoutubeMiroslaw Marks Who goes by the name of MarMir3 on the internet website YouTube.com is from Bydgoszcz in Poland, he was also a music teacher. He has uploaded 64 videos which have had 8,515,220 views, he has 3,143 people subscribing to his updates (this means they get notified each time he adds a new video). Sadly Miroslaw passed away in Sept 2008, I (Rebecca) think he is a great player and it's great that even though he's not here anymore, anyone in the world can still listen to and see him play.
