Leyland Accordion Club - 18th March 2009

Our March Concert

For some reason we found out that The Priory Club had booked another group in to the function room, even though our booking had been in the diary since last September/October. We resolved this issue by taking the bar area as our concert room, Alex knocked the TV off and the fruit machines so they would not bother us and he got his regulars to move into the back bar. Once this had been sorted out, we managed to redirect most people through to the bar as soon as they came through the door. We started the evening off with Colin Ensor playing Reine De Musette, I'll String Along With You, Maigret, At The Balalaika, I Love You Because and Getting Sentimental Over You. Our next player was now lined up to play. It was Ann Parker, who performed Bel Viso, Under Paris Skies and Yodelling Polka. It was now time for our guest artist Stefan Andrusyschyn to take his place in the corner of the bar where we decided was the best spot for the performer. Stefan started his first spot with Bach Prelude and Fugue, followed by Jolly Caballero and Rachmanninovs Vocalese. Stefan continued with Yes My Darling and Dora's Mazurka. Stefan introduced each piece with a narrative about where he had heard the piece or what the piece was about. He continued with Tango Sentiduneco, Oblivion, Romance - with extras and finally finished his first session with Hungarian Dance No 5. After the break and the raffle, we entered our second session with Ann Parker playing Beautiful Days and The Harry Lime Theme. Our next players were Bernard Bamber and Jaqueline who were making their debut at the club playing With A Banjo On My Knee, Galway Bay and 40 Shades Of Green. Before the return of our guest artist, we had Bernard Belshaw playing Where Or When and myself playing Oslo Waltz. Then it was time for Stefan to finish the night. Stefan played Monti's Czardas, Londonderry Air, Olive Blossom, Russian Folk Tunes, Indifference, Cordove, Spanish Gypsy Dance, Figaro's Aria - also know as Largo Al Factotum, Elvira by Petro Deiro, La Campanella Variations. Although it was just after 11pm we still wanted another one and there was a call for an encore, so Stefan finished the night playing Under A Parisian Moon.

Our Internet

Our Internet website has had 127,292 visitors as at the 10th
April 2009, that's 716 visitors since last month. I have something new coming out on the Internet which will do a great deal for our clubs publicity, and which will certainly get us known by even more people than at present. This will take about another 3 to 4 months to set up so I will have to keep it quiet for now while we do tests and check that everything is in place for it to be publicised.

A to Z Of The Accordion Volume 4

Soon to be released is Rob Howards An A to Z of the Accordion Volume 4. This is the 4th and latest in Rob Howard’s popular series of ‘An A to Z of the Accordion’ books. Rob said that he wasnt going to write another book when he released Volume 3, but with so many people writting to him with articles, stories etc there was enough material for another one. I should have details and prices in next months newsletter.

This Wednesday

This Wednesday we have a local players' night which WILL be in the concert room. The nights are getting lighter and the weather warmer, so this makes it easier for people to make it to the club. If you have not played at the club for a while, or played at the club before, then please do make sure you bring your accordion along to give us a tune. We all love to see players progressing and we can only do that if they allow us to hear them play. Doors open at 7.30 for an 8pm start. Please let your friends know about this event if you think they might be interested in having a good social night out. Although the club is based on the Accordion, it is also primarily a social event for likeminded folk to enjoy some good music and most importantly some good company. See you there... David Batty

Steve Roxton Wows the French

The following is a review we found on the Internet about Steve Roxton and his appearance at an exclusive event featuring the cream of French musette accordionists...
"British accordionist and vocalist Steve Roxton impressed French devotees of the instrument at the first ‘Festval d'Accordeon’, held in Avranches, Normandy, with his performances on both nights of the event. The week-end of March 14th and 15th attracted over 1,000 visitors to the Salle Victor Hugo, keen to listen and dance to the elite of the French accordion scene. The festival, featuring Jean Dauvin, Jean-Marc Torchy, Jocelyne Daniel and Michel Lemenager, was headed by non other than the legendary king of "bal musette" himself, Andre Verchuren. At 88 years of age he gave an outstanding concert on the final night. As he sang and played his hits to an audience, many of whom gathered around the stage, the organiser, Daniel Dolley, invited Steve Roxton on to the stage to perform with the master himself. Steve, who has followed Andre Vercheren's career was overjoyed at this opportunity to meet his idol."Whilst we were shaking hands the microphone was thrust in front of me to say something" said Steve, "For everyone in life special moments arrive, and for me this is one of them" he said, (in French, of course). They then went on to play three well known musette pieces together, to the delight of the assembled crowd. Steve's rise to prominence in France was brought about through a chance meeting with ex-World and European champion Jean Dauvin during a twinning association event in St Helier, Jersey, with the Normandy town of Avranches. Steve was booked to play French accordion music and during his performance he was suddenly surprised to hear the sound of another accordion behind him, duetting perfectly with him. Steve and his wife Margaret ran the accordion club ‘Les Amis de l'Accordeon de Jersey’ at that time, and immediately booked Jean Dauvin for a concert the following month. Since that time Jean and Steve have appeared at venues and festivals both in the UK and France and have recorded a CD together, ‘Entente Accordiale’. Asked by Andre Verchuren how he had obtained such a high degree of technique with musette music he confessed to having listened to Andre's LPs at half speed to capture the intricacies of his style. During the meal after the concert Steve was greatly honoured to be formally dubbed "The English Verchuren" by those present. After some 21 years in Jersey, Steve and his wife Margaret are now back home in Middlesbrough in the North East of England, where he presents his one man show, which covers Irish, Scottish, German Bier Keller, Country & Rock 'n Roll along with Old time sing-alongs and ballads.
