Our March ConcertOur March Concert opened with Tom Bennett playing a couple of new tunes - Johnson Rag and I Know Why. Colin Ensor followed this with Reine De Musette, More Than You Know, Yesterday's Dreams and Try A Little Tenderness. Basil Berry was our next player, playing S'wunderful, Lady Be Good - both by Gershwin. These were followed by Only Make Believe, Old Man River, Can't Help Loving That Man Of Mine and A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square. Our final player before our guest artist, was Ann Parker playing Black Mask Waltz, Corrine and The Harry Lime Theme. Our guest artist George Syrett, then took to the stage playing I Will Love You, Once In A While and Cuckoo Waltz. After a little chat with the audience, the music continued with a tango and then Return To Sorrento. George then played Funiculie Funiclar, Lucie E Ombre, St Louis Blues and Rodriguez Guitar Concerto, Jealousy and When I Grow Too Old To Dream. Amazing Grace ledin to a Scottish medley which included Scotland The Brave and Will Ye No Come Back Again. Things slowed down a little for Moulin Rouge and Lolita. After playing Bluebell Polka, George was joined on stage by one of his pupils, Sue Wilkinson, as they played Dark Island and Snow Waltz. After playing Solitude on his own it was time for the first break of the evening. After the break, we started with Bernard Belshaw playing Pigalle, Gypsy Dance and El Cumbanchero on his new Roland accordion. After I played Beer Barrel Polka, it was time for George to return for his second half with a selection on tunes played on his MIDI accordion. These started off with Has Anybody Seen My Girl, Tico Tico, The Wedding Samba, Under Paris Skies, Fascination, Around The World, Moulin Rouge, Anchors Aweigh, Spanish Eyes and La Cumparsita. George finished off his MIDI section with See You Later Alligator, Giddy Up A Ding Dong, Oh When The Saints, You Made Me Love You and It Had To Be You. To finish off the evening, George returned to his acoustic accordion playing Missing You Already, It's A Sin To Tell A Lie, Carolina In The Morning, Danny Boy, Show Me The Way To Go Home, We'll Meet Again, Auld Lang Syne and Now Is The Hour. George had returned to Leyland after the recent poll I did at the club asking for suggestions for future guest artists and, as usual, he entertained us with an excellent selection of material. We look foward to his welcome return in the future. David Batty |

This WednesdayThis Wednesday we have one of our excellent Local Player's Concerts. If you are a player, then please make sure you remember to bring your accordion. If you haven't played at Leyland for a while, or at all, then please bring your accordion along and give us a tune. We love to hear people play even if they are just starting out. We then get to see their progress over the coming months and years. If you know of anyone who would enjoy a nice family night out then please bring them along. You know that the club is a welcoming place. The doors open at 7.30pm for an 8pm start. I look forward to seeing you there.

Chorley FMDid you know that you can listen to the community radio station Chorley FM on 102.8 if you are in the Chorley area, or by visiting http://chorley.fm on the Internet. I am listening to Chorley FM's folk music session at the moment on a sunny Sunday afternoon as I write this newsletter. Forthcoming folk performers on the James Blatchley show will be Bob Williamson (Folk Singer/Comedian From 70’s & 80’s) performing on 22nd of April, and on the 6th May the Houghton Weavers will feature on the same show. I am looking at trying a weeks advertising on Chorley FM to see if we can find more accordionists who haven't yet heard about the club, or people looking for a night out away from trashy pop music. It's an experiment but the station claims a good listenership so I'm willing to give it a try just to see what response if any we get. |
