Our July ConcertOur July night started with Tom Bennett playing The Colqhuin March, then Colin Ensor took to the stage playing The Blacksmith, The Mist Covered Mountains, Going Home and Try A Little Tenderness. It was then time for our guest artist Walter Perrie to start his first half. Walter opened with some new jigs: Murray's Fancy, Banjo Breakdown, Bronni's Blue Brozzi and Murray. It was then on to a selection of Waltzes, including Jock o' Hazeldean, My Dear One, Mist Covered Mountains Of Home and Highland Cradle Song. After some unnamed pieces, we continued with Ballochyle, Mackenzie Hay and The Brolum. Things slowed down with The Highland Cradle Song then continued with Balmoral Highlanders, St Annes Reel, New High Level and Archie Menzies. The next piece D'Accordeoniste was then followed by a French selection consisting of Fleur D'Paris, Paris Je T'Aime, La Vie En Rose, Umbrellas Of Cherbourg and Les Denicheurs. After Cubanola we had the Frosini piece Hot Points and Mazurka Italiana. It was almost time for the break now, so Walter headed to the end of his first half with a set of Reels: The Dawn Nicky Ainsworth, Moving Clouds and Johnny MacNeill. To end his first session, Walter played The Hens March To The Midden, Bonny Dundee, Those Were The Days and Hava Nagilah. After the break we had the welcome return of Colin Ensor playing La Vie En Rose and The Maigret Theme. After a second performance from Tom Bennett, it was my turn to play just one tune before giving up the stage to Walter for his second spot of the evening. Walter opened with a medley of My Homeland, I See Mull, Green Hills Of Tyrol and then My Homeland to finish the medley. A set of Jigs was next, consisting of Hot Punch, The Directors, The Hawthorn Stick, Tam's Hunting Horn and The Quarryman. A Westering Home medley was followed by Hills Of Alva, Mrs McPherson Of Inveran and a selection of unnamed tunes. Walter continued the entertainment with Country Girl, Bel Viso, an Italian selection and Ausade d'Oiseau. Walter's son Adrian, who was in the audience, gave his dad a short break while he played a small selection of classical pieces on his acoustic guitar. When Adrian was young, I gave him an old guitar because he wanted to start to learn to play. It was nice to see that he has made a success of that dream. He did tell me that he still has the guitar I gave him and that it had been through university with him. He now plays a far more expensive model that's far more suited to his abilities. Walter then continued his second half with La Danza, a selection of Russian pieces, Figaro's Aria, Carnival Of Venice and a set of reels, including Circassian Circle. It was almost the end of the evening now and time for a few more pieces to top a fantastic night. Walter thanked us for having him and then played bonny Galloway, a set of reels, High Level, Banks Hornpipe, Chopin's Minute Waltz, Tico Tico, and finally an Italian selection to finish. It was late when we left the club because there was a lot of excitement and talk at the end of the night. A good time had been had by all and we had the welcome return of a few faces in the audience that hadn't been at the club for a while for various reasons. It was nice to see you again this month, welcome back. I am already looking forward to this Wednesday's concert when the local players get to perform. I hope to see you there..... |

This WednesdayThis Wednesday, we look forward to another of our local player concerts. Players don't forget your accordions. If you are a player who hasn't played at the club before, then please bring your accordion along to give us a tune. If you have an accordion or anything accordion related to sell, then bring it along and leave it on display on the stage with a price on it. You never know, you might make some money while your enjoying a concert. Please let any family or friends know about our concerts. I am producing some posters about the club so, if you can stick one up anywhere, please ask at the door for one.Doors open at 7.30pm for an 8pm start. I look forward to seeing you there. David Batty

Let Me Entertain YouA new entertainment series starts on Wednesday 23rd August 2006 at 4.30pm to 5.15. This 45 minute programme is hosted by Brian Conley who invites acts to perform and entertain his studio audience in any way they choose. Each act has up to three minutes and each member of the audience has a button which they can press when they've had enough. Once half of the audience has pushed their button, the act comes to an abrupt end and is forced to leave the stage. If an act lasts for more than one minute they get a cash prize, for two minutes they get a bigger cash prize and if the act manages to stay on stage for the full three minutes then they win an award, £1,000, and the chance to come back and compete in the semi-final. One of the programmes features The Petulengros as one of their acts. They are Julie Langton on accordion, Leah Langton on accordion, Shannon Langton on drums, Nancy Langton on accordion and Daisy Lee Pattison on accordion. I won't tell you how they did but I am sure the programme will be entertaining. It reminds me of The Gong Show which none of the above will have probably heard of. I'm showing my age knowing that one. |

Three Items For Sale

Our Picnic 2006Our 2006 picnic was held on Sunday 30th of July at its usual venue of Hollins Farm, Hollins Lane, Leyland. As usual we had a glorious day of sunshine in which to enjoy the 8 hours of music which started about 12 noon, continuing until 8pm. Around 50 cars visited us during the day to add to the caravans located down the side of the field. Picnic tables, blankets, sun shades, hats, sunglasses, food and drink were in abundance. The stage was an open stage which meant that everyone was left to organise themselves in whatever order they wanted, most taking to the stage when they felt sufficiently rested in the warm sun. The music was almost non-stop, and the only breaks were as one act finished and the next one set up. During the afternoon we had a mixture of solo players, duets, groups, keyboard, drums and a banjo player. In the early evening we had a mass busk on the stage which included all the above. I have to say thanks to Harold for letting us use his field and for making sure the grass was cut nice and short. I took about 100 photographs on the day of the picnic, and shortly, a good selection of them will be added to our website soon so you can view, download and optionally print copies of your favourite images of the day. They look much better in colour. |
