Leyland Accordion Club - 18th January 2006

Our January Concert

Our January Concert started with Basil Berry playing a selection of pieces, this was followed y Ray Peacock playing the theme to The Sound Of Music. After myself and Tom Bennet had played, it was time for our guest artist William Langton to take to the stage. William started with Beasme Mucho, La Paloma and Spanish Eyes. His next piece Luci E Ombre led to the slower Chanson D'Amour. You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You, Bel Fiori by Frosini and The Lambada took us to halfway into Williams first half. After playing Puppazetti on his own, William invited his sister Julie to join him on stage. Julie first played Arpeggio Polka and Czardas by Gugazza as solo pieces before being joined by William and together they played Oh How We Danced and The Dr Zhivago Theme. William then returned to playing solo with The Irish Washerwoman, The Can Can, Camptown Races, Eye Level and to finish his first half, a Scottish Medley. After the break we started with Basil Berry playing a selection of pieces, followed by Gina Branelli playing Bel Viso, Under Paris Skies, Never On A Sunday, The Carnival Of Venice, Soir De Paris and Jolly Caballero. It was time for William to start his second half with kisses for me, Tie A Yellow Ribbon, Williams Musette, Brazil, Tico Tico, El Cumbacero, All Of Me and Spanish Gypsy Dance. Things slowed down next with Love Letters In The Sand and Smile. The rousing Beer Barrel Polka and Baby Face started a selection of faster pieces which included Four Leaf Clover. Shuffling Along and Graceful Lady Of Paris were followed by Eye Level which was the theme tune to the Dutch detective series Van der Valk. We were getting close to the end of the night now. The final pieces played by William and Julie were Hava Nagilah, Angels Dream, Amore Apaasionato and to finish, Sarah Janes Musette- Bianca Capana. We had enjoyed a great night of entertainment from William and Julie Langton, I hope we see them at the club again in the near future. David Batty

Only Joking

A man is stopped for speeding down the motorway, the policeman takes great pride in telling him that he is going to throw the book at him. When asked why he was speeding the man replies that he was rushing home because he has guns, bomb making equipment and stolen goods in the boot of the car. The worried policeman makes him step away from the car, radios in help and is soon surrounded by armed police and roadblocks. When the police chief asks the man if he has guns, bomb making equipment and stolen goods in his boot the man replies, take a look. When they look in the boot it is empty. The man replies 'See- Nothing', 'that policeman is such as liar, he will probably tell you I was speeding next'!

Art Van Damme at Caister Festival

American jazz accordion legend Art Van Damme is to make a long awaited return to the UK, appearing as the chief guest artiste at the Caister 'Accordions International' Festival, Haven Holiday Park Norfolk, England, from November 2nd to 6th 2006. Other accordion guests at the festival include Gary Blair, Jack Emblow and Tony Compton, and Romano Viazzani. Brought up in Chicago, Art Van Damme took up the accordion at the age of nine, and was classically trained before discovering jazz as a teenager, and was initially inspired by the great clarinet player Benny Goodman. One musicologist made the following neat comment: "The hippest cat ever to swing an accordion, Art Van Damme dared go where no man had gone before: jazz accordion". Art Van Damme has toured the world numerous times, made scores of recordings, and is generally recognised as one of the great accordion legends of the post-World War Two era. The festival includes concerts, workshops, master classes, 'free and easy' sessions, dancing and a trade show. Bookings will take place from March 1st. New Accordion Band - Fismen

You might start seeing a new brand of accordions appearing soon called Fismen. These are produced by the Fismen Accordion Company, which was founded in the year 2000. Though still a very young company, all of the companys 9 workers have a lot of experience in the accordion industry. At the beginning, Fismen only produced accordions for famous brands but, since autumn 2005, they have been designing and building their own models. Led by Günther Lerch, the company is producing new instruments that are proving popular, and are available in a range of new colours. The South Tyrolean accordion builder Hans Lapper is working for FISMEN on more new models to extend the range currently on offer. For further for information email: lerch.g@sbg.at

Another New Accordion Manufacturer

A new accordion factory will soon open in the city of Jaú, in the state of São Paulo. The factory is expected to become the largest manufacturer of accordions in South America. The manufacturing standards are to be inspected and monitored by technicians from Castelfidardo, Italy. The factory is situated close to an accordion museum, an official opening ceremony in June is to be attended by Paolo Gandolfi and Mirco Patarini, from Italy. For further information email: acordeon@valerio.com.br

Our Website

Our internet website has had 89,630 vistors as at 14th of February 2006. That's 1265 visitors to the main page of our website since last month. The visitor numbers to our website have been good, as have the visitor numbers to our radio station which currently stands at 1481 listening hours in the last 30 days, the average listening time is about half an hour so that means that around 2962 times in the last 30 days, someone has visited www.accordionradio.co.uk and started listening.

Piracy In the Accordion World

It is widely being reported at the moment that famous name brands of accordions are being pirated by a manufacturer in a town near to Castelfidardo. Due to the unproven nature of the stories going round and the press releases that have yet to be confirmed, I am waiting until I have more facts before reporting who is doing what, but I can say that it is top quality accordions that are supposedly being copied in a factory in Italy without the brand owners permission. There will be more information when I have it confirmed.

Organised by John Romero, the guest accordionists include Romano Viazzani, Gary Blair, Paul Chamberlain, Sue Coppard, Gennaro Fiondella, Harry Hussey, Lisa Lee Leslie, John Romero, and Charlie Watkins. Hyper Accordion

Berklee graduate/accordion player Michael Ward-Bergeman, who has performance credits on film scores to North Country, is using Eventide's Eclipse stereo effects processor for his "hyper-accordion." “When I developed the hyper-accordion," he says, "my goal was to stretch the boundaries of what the traditional instrument could do. Paramount to this goal from the beginning was effects processing. The accordion is one of the world’s only true stereo instruments, which gave me a tremendous amount of room to explore new sounds with my customized stereo miking configuration. I had used other technologies, but they never delivered the sounds I envisioned. After extensive research, the Eventide Eclipse became hands-down the most versatile and comprehensive solution.” Ward-Bergeman’s hyper-accordion is based on the traditional accordion but takes advantage of the natural stereo separation provided by the bellows. With a customized microphone setup, the hyper-accordion delivers two distinct tone sources that are routed directly to the Eventide Eclipse stereo inputs. From there, Ward-Bergeman enhances each tone with a multitude of effects, enabling the instrument in concert with the Eclipse to produce unheard-of sounds. "The entire concept of the hyper-accordion is to unite the accordion with dynamic signal processing, playing them together as one instrument," says Ward-Bergeman. "It is critical that the processor's response to numerous and varied performance gestures be accurate and patchable to as many parameters as possible. The Eventide Eclipse has enabled me to achieve both superior fidelity and expressivity, creating a rich tapestry of sounds without losing the natural integrity of the instrument. I look forward to using the Eclipse and bringing the hyper-accordion to new destinations." Based in London, Ward-Bergeman is continuing to incorporate the Eventide Eclipse into his mix in new ways, including the configuration of an intricate MIDI pedal control system. Ward-Bergeman just completed a West Coast tour of the US. with sporano Dawn Upshaw, Gustavo Santaolalla and ensemble. I have no idea what kinds of sounds this accordion will make but you can bet it will be like no other. Perhaps he will be available to do a demo at the club sometime soon?
